It was more than a donation. It was an investment in the future — an investment in the dreams of younger ones and in generations yet unborn. Without doubt, it was a worthwhile investment.
The donation of laboratory materials for all science subjects was the highpoint of the 40th Anniversary Reunion activities of the 1986 Set of Egba Comprehensive High School, Asero, Abeokuta.Thus, beyond the banters, camaraderie, and nostalgia, the set demonstrated their commitment to reviving science education in their alma mater.
It is an incontrovertible fact that a functional laboratory is the backbone of science education. It bridges the gap between theory and practice by giving students the opportunity to test ideas, observe results, and develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Through hands-on experiments, learners gain confidence and acquire the practical competence required for higher education and industry.
Sadly, the reality in many schools today is the opposite. Like libraries that exist as empty structures without books, many school laboratories are also mere rooms without equipment, reagents, or trained technicians. Students are taught science with chalk and diagrams, and many graduate without ever conducting a single experiment.
The intervention by ECHSOSA ’86 Set is therefore a timely reminder that old students have a critical role to play in reviving standards and securing the future of their alma mater.
The
project, estimated at ₦12.5 million, ensured that the Physics, Chemistry, and Biology Laboratories were fully equipped.
Items donated for the Physics Laboratory include Connecting Wires, Ammeter 0.05A, Battery 3V and 1.5V, Voltmeter 1.5V, Spiral Spring, Galvanometer, Bar Magnet, Horse Shoes Magnet, Stopwatch, Teachers' Graph Board, and Charts on Energy Levels, Vector, Moment, Electrolysis, Photocell and X-Ray Machine.
For the Chemistry Laboratory, the set provided Beakers 250ml, Conical Flasks, Erlenmeyer Flasks, Test Tubes and Test Tube Racks, Bunsen Burner with Tripod Stand and Wire Gauze, Thermometer, Analytical Balance, Pipette, Burette, Crucible, Stirring Rod, Funnel, Filter Paper, Fume Cupboard, Safety Goggles, Safety Gloves, Lab Coats, as well as Reagents including Formalin, Biuret Reagent, Iodine Solution, Million’s Reagent, Fehling’s Solution and Benedict’s Solution.
The Biology Laboratory also received a boost with a Human Skeleton Model Chart, Microscope, Microscope Slides, Dissecting Set, Clinical Thermometer, Nose Masks, A4 Paper, Cellotape, and Charts of the Respiratory System.
The President of the Set, Pastor Sobayo Sowunmi and the Project Committee Chairman, Estate Surveyor Wale Ojo handed over the facilities to the school management.
The school management was represented by the Principal of the Senior School, Mr. Jimi Akinlotan, the Principal of the Junior School, Mrs. Janet Adetoyinbo, and the Vice Principal of the Senior School, promised that the facilities would be put to judicious use.
Pastor Sowunmi said the essence of life is to impact others positively. He appreciated the National President, Chief Femi Popoola, for his efforts in restoring the glory of the school. He also thanked members of the set for making the dream possible through their support and generous donations. He recalled that five years ago, the same set had renovated the laboratory building and pledged to return to equip it.

Also speaking, a school elder and septuagenarian, Rev. Fafunwa, said the donation was a step in the right direction that will reposition the school and give students a reason to excel.
The National Secretary, Mr. Nurudeen Sanyaolu, a chemist himself, expressed delight at the huge investment in the school laboratories.
One of the person that made the 40th anniversary celebration for the 1986.set.memorable was Project Committee Chairman, Estate Surveyor Wale Ojo who ensured that all members of the set without leaving anyone behind was made to introduce themselves and this added pep and colour to the event. He also thanks members for their unwavering Commitment for making the project a reality by providing support to the executive team and the project committee.
The set later converged on Park Inn, Kuto, Abeokuta for the 40th Anniversary party and merriment.
