The Significance of the Veil Being Torn at Christ' Death

What are the major  events that happened at Christ death ?

The curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. And the earth shook, and the rocks were split. The tombs also were opened.

Let's leave the other issues for other time. Where we are going today is very symbolic and significant.

The veil of the temple was torn. Which temple ?, what veil?.

This is the question every discernible mind must ask.

The simple answer is that 'the veil was the heavy curtain in the Temple at Jerusalem which was torn when Jesus died'. But, spiritually, it was more than meet the  eye.

*What the scripture is saying*

Matthew 27:51 says, "Behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent." This curtain separated the second room called the Holy of Holies from the first room, the Holy Place.

Hebrew 10: 19-22

Therefore, brethren, since we have confidence to enter the holy place by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way which He inaugurated for us through the veil, that is, His flesh, and since we have a great priest over the house of God,
let us draw near with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.

Each Bible verses we picked draw the meaning more closer.

Though with a naked eye and  in lay man's language like ours, it was said that it was the veil of the temple in Jerusalem. But, deeper knowledge and understanding  has shown that it was more of a misery.

The veil ideally was the boundary between earth and heaven. For instance, Josephus and Philo agree that the four different colours from which it was woven represented the four elements from which the world was created: earth, air, fire and water.

So without belabouring the point,His death broke the barrier between man and God which was the Gulf created through the adamic sin. It was a veil that was torn by the creator himself.

Here is a little more explanation about the colour of the Veil : This veil was colored blue at one end and red at the other end blending into purple in the middle. Blue is for the heavens; red is for the red earth; purple was the perfect blend of the two. These colors represented Christ, the God-Man, who's the only Door to God. The Temple veil was the thickness of a man's hand embroidered with figures of cherubim like those Ezekiel saw guarding God's Throne. The veil was also a picture of death whereby we enter the Presence of God.

So, symbolically it represents the entering into the presence of God by man without going or coming through any emissaries. We have been taught that in the old testament, no one talks to God directly except few people like Moses who saw something close to his face. He speaks to people through the prophets and the angels. But, with the coming of Christ  who died that we may be Redeemed; who died that we may be called true son of God, we are now a product of grace who now enjoys unfettered access to God without the help of any intermediaries.

The only intermediary we need is Jesus who paid the supreme price.  Once we go to the father through the right channel of Christ the savour of mankind, we do not need any other soothsayer or prophet to lead the way. Jesus said " I am the way the, truth and the life. No one comes to the father except through me.

You are at liberty to have unfettered access to your father through the name of his begotten Son Jesus Christ.

This has remained a misery to many and many people have continued to denied this reality to their own peril. They have tried to  cover the people with veil to deceive them.

Let  not be deceived : Jesus is the way, the truth and the Life.
No controversies.

The bottom line is that in the overall analysis, no earthly priest is needed to beg for our forgiveness. Anyone may enter God's presence by way of Jesus' blood, shed to pay the wages of our sins (Romans 6:23). Isn't that awesome.?

Shallom .
