A former Minister of State for Agriculture and Rural Development, Alh. Najeem Adewale Awodele has called on Federal and State government Agencies saddles with the responsibility of Businesses Promotion to support indigenous fabrics and textiles industry to accelerate growth and export of local materials especially adire for economic prosperity of the Nation.
Speaking at the 2nd National Adire Festival at the June 12 Cultural center, Kuto Abeokuta, Alh. Awodele noted that serious collaborative effort and support by government with private and indigenous Adire makers is key to unlock the potential of the sector and encourage Youth and Women to key into the sector.
Other Discussants at the event including Dr. Tunde Adegbola, Mr. Lasun Somoye and Prof. Mrs. Braide were unanimous in lending their voice that Government should work hard to support the local Adire Fabric industry by enhancing local content in the production chains saying a situation whereby inputs used in Adire production were imported does not support sustainability.
In his address, the Olowu of Owu Kingdom, Oba Saka Matemilola ably represented by Orunto of Owu, Chief Biodun Lashile commended Asani and Aduke Foundation for initiating the National Adire Festival as a rallying point for stakeholders within the Adire Fabric sector to discuss as seek the best economic pathway to make the industry attractive and for sustainability.
Earlier in her welcome address the Executive Director of Asani and Aduke Foundation, Dr. Ronke Adeboyejo said the theme of the Festival, 'Empowering Youths and Women for Economic Viability' was targeted at sustaining the industry by encouraging young men and women in the sector and appreciated the German International Cooperation for Development, GIZ for sponsoring a master class for 100 participants to become entrepreneurs.
