A renowned expert in Geography and Regional Planning at Olabisi Onabanjo University in Ago Iwoye, Professor Bamidele Badejo, has said that Urban problems do not occur by happenstance but an accumulation of processes.
He stated this this Monday at a lecture delivered at the World Habitat Day celebration organized by Town Planner Bimbo Ashiru in Abeokuta
The event commemorates World Habitat Day, a global observance declared by the United Nations Habitat to spotlight the world's habitats, aiming for a better environment for current and future generations.
Speaking on this year’s theme, Urban Crisis Response*, Professor Badejo emphasized that urban crises don’t just suddenly appear; instead, they’re complex accumulations of processes* over time.
He highlighted critical factors contributing to these crises, including livability issues, a glaring absence of infrastructure, and the need for enhanced human capacity to effectively manage urban resources.
Additionally, he stressed the importance of housing provision and adequate accommodatiitt6
as essential components demanding immediate attention.
The professor underscored that responding to these multifaceted urban crises is imminent and requires a collective effort — literally, all hands on deck " It’s a multilayer issue needing comprehensive solutions involving various stakeholders and expertise.
Interestingly, he pinpointed Town Planning professors as the most suitable experts capable of midwiving responses to solve these urban crises, asserting they must recognize and play their pivotal roles accordingly.
This year’s World Habitat Day aligns perfectly with Sustainable Development Goal 11, focusing on sustainable cities and communities. The global observance aims to raise awareness about sustaining global populations and addressing pressing urban challenges, including climate change, conflicts, and inequality.
