The Governing Council of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) has approved the promotion of veteran journalist and media scholar Dr. Tayo Popoola to the rank of full Professor in the Department of Mass Communication.
According to reports Dr. Popoola was elevated from Associate Professor to full Professor.
Professor Popoola brings decades of newsroom experience to the professoriate.
In his journalism career, he served at various times as staff writer, Political Correspondent, Political Editor, Assistant News Editor, News Editor, Deputy Editor, and Editor.
He left the defunct Diet weekend newspaper as editor in 2001 before joining UNILAG in 2002 as an Assistant Lecturer.
He rose steadily through the academic ranks Lecturer II, Lecturer I, Senior Lecturer, Associate Professor culminating in his current promotion to full Professor.
A prolific scholar, Popoola has published extensively in local and international journals and contributed chapters to textbooks worldwide.
His authored works include Introduction to Government (2001), GSM as a Tool for News Reporting in Nigeria (2003),Mass Media Law in Nigeria: A Professional Perspective_ (2016), Parrot Journalism: A Guide to Investigative Journalism (2019), and Introduction to Political Communication in Nigeria (2026), among others.
An expert in Political Communication, Professor Popoola currently serves as the Acting Head of the Department of Mass Communication, University of Lagos.
