Egba High School, Abeokuta, Earns National Honour as CIIN Recognises Outstanding Contribution to Insurance Education

Egba Comprehensive High School, Abeokuta, has been honoured with the prestigious School Recognition Award by the Chartered Insurance Institute of Nigeria (CIIN), cementing its status as a leading advocate for professional and vocational education in Ogun State.

The award was formally presented on Friday, May 22, 2026, at the Insurance Week Gala Night held at the Paradise Event Arena, Yaba, Lagos. The colourful ceremony marked the grand finale of the 2026 Insurance Week, a nationwide campaign that ran from May 16 to May 22 to promote insurance awareness and deepen professional participation across Nigeria.

Representing the school at the event were the Principal, Mr. Olujimi Akinlotan, and Mr. Adeniyi, who received the plaque and certificate on behalf of staff and students. The Gala Night attracted top executives from underwriting firms, brokerage companies, regulators, and educational institutions.

In a statement ahead of the event, CIIN Registrar/CEO, Dr. Abimbola Tiamiyu, FIIN, revealed that Egba Comprehensive High School was singled out after an extensive review of enrollment data from the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). The Abeokuta-based school emerged as one of the secondary institutions with the highest number of candidates who registered for Insurance as a subject.

“This commendable achievement aligns with our vision to deepen awareness and participation in the insurance profession from the foundational level,” Dr. Tiamiyu said. “When secondary schools deliberately expose students to insurance, we are building the next generation of risk managers, actuaries, and industry leaders.”

The School Recognition Award is part of CIIN’s strategic drive to “catch them young” by incentivising schools that promote insurance as a viable career path. The Institute believes early exposure will address the profession’s talent gap and improve public perception of insurance in Nigeria.

For Egba Comprehensive High School, the award reflects years of intentional curriculum focus and career guidance. The school introduced Insurance as a trade subject under the 9-3-4 system and has consistently encouraged SS3 students to select it during WASSCE registration. Teachers in the Business Department also organise insurance career talks in partnership with NAICOM and local brokers.

Principal Olujimi Akinlotan, speaking after receiving the award, dedicated it to the school’s teachers and students. “This is proof that public schools can lead in specialized education. We will not rest. Our goal is to produce students who don’t just pass WASSCE, but who graduate with skills the economy needs,” he said.

The 2026 Insurance Week theme, _“Insurance: Securing the Future”_, featured school debates, essay competitions, and a national quiz—programmes Egba Comprehensive High School participated in actively throughout the week.

With this recognition, Egba Comprehensive High School joins a select list of institutions nationwide spotlighted by CIIN for curriculum innovation. Education stakeholders in Ogun State say the award will likely spur other secondary schools in the region to adopt insurance and other professional subjects, expanding career options for students beyond traditional arts and sciences.

The CIIN School Recognition Award includes a commemorative plaque, branded learning materials for the school’s library, and automatic slots for two teachers to attend CIIN’s 2026 Teachers’ Capacity Workshop in Lagos.
