The Ogun State Government has sounded a note of warning to quacks who parade themselves as medical practitioners to avoid practising within the length and breadth of the state, saying the full weight of the law will catch up with any culprit.
This was made known by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Dr. Adesanya Ayinde while speaking on the entrepreneural training which was made mandatory for final year students of the School of Nursing, Idi-Aba, Abeokuta, the state capital.
Dr. Ayinde described quackery as a way of indulging in practices outside one's scope of knowledge, noting that the medical field is multi-faceted enough for practitioners.
He lamented that this untoward practice could lead to loss of lives and it is capable of maiming such that would make the victim to perform below the usual ability.
According to him, the government knows how to reach out to quacks with the long hand off the law. It is, therefore, a responsibility for various stakeholders to collaborate with the present administration to get rid of quacks in Ogun State.
The Permanent Secretary, who commended the leadership of the School of Nursing, Idi-Aba, Abeokuta, said the training will make the student- nurses upon graduation not to be desperate in their quest for white collar job and it would enable them to have an alternative source of income when they get their dream job.
In her remarks, the Principal of the School, Mrs. Dele Alonge, called on the public to desist from patronising unskilled health workers, pointing out whoever wishes to become medical practitioners should take the pain to go through training.
Mrs. Alonge further noted that the enterpreneural skills as a course, being taught in the School of Nursing, Idi-Aba, Abeokuta, was brought into the curriculum by the regulatory body to equip the nurses upon graduation with additional skill.
Speaking in an interview, two of the final year student nurses, Taoheed Eniola and Akinbona Gbenga, expressed satisfaction with the course, saying that it would afford them the opportunity to use their day-off from work judiciously.
The students were trained in soap making, baking, head gear making and make-up respectively.
