An Author and Founder of SixthSense Initiative, Chief Abiodun Lasile, has called federal government to approve reading as a compulsory subject in primary and secondary school curriculum inorder to imbibe reading culture in pupils across Nigeria
Lasile stated this at the 7th annual event of the SixthSense Reading competition - aimed at fostering love of reading among pupils and students of primary and secondary schools in Ogun State, held at Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, Abeokuta.
He urged the federal government to make reading a compulsory subject like Mathematics and English to enable pupils and students see reading as subject for promotion to the next class and a yardstick attain greatness in life.
The Publisher of Sixthsense series publication, who lamented lack of libraries in public school, tasked the federal and the state governments across the country to provide more libraries and librarians in the state and public schools to encourage reading culture in the nation.
He admonished parents to imbibe the spirit of reading in the children by buying books and magazines for them to read while appealing to media practitioners to create programmes and events on their platforms to promote reading culture among the children both in the state and entire country.
Lasile said" The federal government and the state government need to approve reading as a subject that students and pupils will expect like they expect English, Mathematics, and Biology, they must provide Libraries in all the schools".
"They must provide books in there, they must employ librarians, that is the government, the parents too can do a lot encourage their wards to read, they must buy novels for them buy magazines, buy publications that will supervise them to read."
The media too, they need to create programmes and events that will promote reading culture we are not readers as a nation and hence the six sense series which I founded is rigorously promoting this because i am passionate about it is my life." he added
