The Chairman of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Abeokuta Branch , Engineer.l Olumayowa Idowu, has called for equal pay and better remuneration for engineers in Nigeria. Idowu made this call in a statement titled "Engineers Deserve Equal Pay: A Call for Fair Remuneration".
According to Idowu, engineers play a vital role in designing and developing infrastructure and equipment essential for nearly every profession, including healthcare, education, and industry. Despite this, they are often not compensated equally with other professionals like doctors, lawyers, and pharmacists.
"The government must take concrete steps to address this issue, especially now that Nigeria is a full member of the Washington Accord, presenting an opportunity for Nigerian engineers to compete internationally," Idowu stated.
Idowu emphasized that engineers have a vast impact on all sectors, and their work is critical to the success of many industries. "Engineering deserves equal pay with other top-notch professionals," he firmly believes.
The NSE Chairman also commended the resuscitation of the Engineering Residency Programme in Nigeria, saying it will improve the quality of engineering education and prepare Nigerian engineers to compete globally.
However, Idowu noted that the programme's abandonment 40 years ago due to lack of funding is a stark reminder of the challenges engineers face. He urged the government to find solutions to funding challenges and ensure that engineers are properly remunerated.
By addressing the remuneration issue and providing adequate funding for the residency programme, Idowu believes the government can ensure that Nigerian engineers are well-equipped to compete globally and contribute to the country's development.
