Academic staff in the three Lagos State-owned universities have commenced an *indefinite strike* over the non-implementation of the December 2025 FGN/ASUU agreement.
The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, chapters of *Lagos State University, LASU, Ojo*; *Lagos State University of Education, LASUED, Oto/Ijanikin*; and *Lagos State University of Science and Technology, LASUSTECH, Ikorodu* announced the decision on Tuesday after separate congresses.
*Why the strike?*
In a joint statement issued on August 31, 2026, the three unions gave the Lagos State Government a 14-day ultimatum to implement the signed agreement. The deadline expired on Sunday, September 13, 2026, with no response from the government.
The statement, signed by *Dr. Olusegun Babalola* - ASUU-LASU Coordinator, *Comrade Grace Olayemi* - Acting Chair, ASUU-LASUED, and *Comrade Murisiku Onigemo* - ASUU-LASUSTECH Chair, was titled: _“Expiration of Ultimatum: ASUU Declares Total, Indefinite Strike Across Lagos State-Owned Universities.”_
It reads in part:
> “Following the expiration of the 14-day ultimatum issued to the Lagos State Government on August 31, 2026, the ASUU Joint Campus Group hereby declares a total, comprehensive, and indefinite strike action effective immediately.”
The union added that a final warning issued on September 10, 2026, stated that “silence is no longer an option.”
*Key Demands*
ASUU said its principal demand is the *full domestication and implementation of the December 2025 ASUU-FGN agreement* across all Lagos State-owned universities.
This includes:
- *Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance, CATA*
- *Welfare protections for active and retired academic staff*
The union accused the state government of “continuous inaction and disregard for agreements successfully implemented by neighbouring states.”
*What happens next?*
ASUU said the strike will remain in force until the state government engages meaningfully and signs, domesticates, and implements the 2025 agreement in full.
The union noted it acted “with a heavy heart” and appealed to students, parents, and stakeholders for understanding. It stressed that the action is not against the university managements.
The statement added that the action has the full backing of ASUU National, and Lagos is among 20 states that have failed to implement the 2025 agreement.
“We remain committed to constructive dialogue and to the swift restoration of normal academic activities once these outstanding issues are addressed,” the union said.
