The need to take health and safety of employees seriously cannot be over emphasised, hence workers in Ogun state have been called upon to engage in regular medical check-ups and exercise for effective service delivery.
Head of Occupational Health and Safety unit, Ministry of Health, Dr. Festus Adetonwa stated this at a sensitization programme for workers in the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure to commemorate the World Health and Safety day in Abeokuta.
The Programme, with the theme, Safety and Healthy Working Environment, A Fundamental Human Right, Dr. Adetonwa said that the day which is celebrated every April 28 was to raise workers awareness on healthy life-style while aiming at preventing diseases and maintaining the highest degree of physical, mental and social well-being.
He advised management of the ministry to encourage staffers to be physically active as part of their daily official activities, saying that sitting on a spot for a long time could be detrimental to their health.
While urging the staffers to plan for regular check-ups such as blood pressure, glucose check, urinalysis and blood assessment, the doctor noted that early diagnosis could help prevent health challenges like cancer, hypertension, diabetes, among others.
In her vote of thanks, the Director Administration and Supplies, Ministry of Works and Infrastructure, Mrs. Oladunni Adetona, commended the Ministry of Health for the initiative, adding that the programme would spur workers to pay more attention to their health and well-being for improved performance.
She also assured that the Ministry would continue to interact with workers to encourage them to do regular check-up without leaving things to chance.
The programme was graced by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Works and Infrastructure , Engr. Dr. Lateef Yusuf.
