The demise of Former President Muhammadu Buhari and Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, on the same day has sent shockwaves across the nation. These two influential figures shared a deep and enduring friendship that transcended time and circumstance.

Their friendship dates back to the 1980s when a military coup led by Buhari inadvertently saved Adetona's throne. In 1983, the then-governor of Ogun State, Olabisi Onabanjo, had signed a formal order deposing Adetona, but the coup on December 31, 1983, led by Buhari, overthrew the civilian government, and the order was never enforced. This twist of fate strengthened the bond between the two men for decades to come.¹

A Friendship Rooted in Mutual Respect

Adetona, who reigned for an extraordinary 65 years, making him the longest-serving traditional ruler in West Africa, had a decades-long friendship with Buhari rooted in mutual respect and shared conservative values. Buhari, who passed away at 82, and Adetona, who passed away at 91, leaves behind a legacy of their remarkable bond.²

Significance of Their Death on the Same Day

The coincidence of their deaths on the same day has sparked widespread tributes and condolences. The Ogun State Governor , Prince Dapo Abiodun while announcing the passing of Awujale described  it as a double pian, especially coming at a time the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari is still fresh, praying to God to repose the souls of the two patriotic Nigerians, who were known friends while alive.

Governor 'Seyi Makinde of Oyo State described Buhari's death as unexpected, noting the former president's significant contributions to the country. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has also paid his respects, speaking with Aisha Buhari, the former president's wife.³ ⁴
